Open Call RE:FWD:

Oorlogen, globalisatie, hyperkapitalisme, systematische mensenrechtenschendingen, epidemieën, desastreuze klimaatverandering: wij bevinden ons op dit moment in een constellatie van crisissen waar we steeds dieper in weg lijken te zakken. En alhoewel sommige crisissen op dit moment duidelijker zichtbaar zijn dan anderen, zijn ze allemaal even relevant: ze zijn allemaal verbonden met elkaar, met ons en met de machtsstructuren die ervan profiteren. Om naar een hoopvolle toekomst te kunnen bewegen moeten we gezamenlijk het onbekende visualiseren en actie ondernemen. En wij geloven dat kunst daar bij uitstek het medium voor is. 

Zaadjes voor de toekomst

Met de aankomende tentoonstelling RE:FWD: (voorheen No Time To Despair) zullen wij, co-curatoren Caithlin Courtney Chong, Thierno Deme en Mees Elias van Zanten, proberen zaadjes te planten voor een hoopvolle toekomst. Wij willen jou, de kunstenaar, stimuleren om het publiek te laten rouwen om het verleden, aanpassingen te laten doen in het heden of om zich vernieuwende toekomstscenario´s in te laten beelden. 

Deze tentoonstelling richt zich op de generatie kunstenaars die jonger zijn dan 35 jaar. Niet omdat zij de enige “opkomende” of “ondervertegenwoordigde” kunstenaars zijn, maar vanwege de manier waarop de jongere generaties beïnvloed worden door een specifieke constellatie van crises. Het gewicht van deze realiteiten vormt hun heden en hun toekomst. Daarom willen wij, als curatoren van diezelfde generatie, een dialoog aangaan met jonge collega-kunstenaars die dezelfde worstelingen en hoop doormaken. Wij geloven namelijk dat dit een cruciaal moment is om te begrijpen hoe jonge mensen zich hoop en transformatie voorstellen.

Doe mee!

Alle kunstenaars die nu onder de 35 jaar zijn, in Nederland wonen en van wie de praktijk zich richt op onderwerpen zoals collectivisme, verbondenheid, hoop, (maatschappelijke) verandering, alternatieve werkelijkheden/possible futures (bijv. ‘Egalitaire Utopieën’) en/of rouw, worden sterk aangemoedigd om deel te nemen aan deze open call met bestaand, aangepast of nieuw werk. Er kunnen per kunstenaar maximaal drie verschillende werken ingestuurd worden.

De tentoonstelling RE:FWD: vindt plaats op twee verschillende locaties:

• Kunstlinie (Almere) voor ongeveer zes maanden;
• NDSM FUSE (Amsterdam) voor ongeveer zes weken.

Geïnteresseerd?

Wat we van je nodig hebben:

• Een korte beschrijving (max. 250 woorden) van het werk dat je wilt maken of waarmee je wilt deelnemen aan de open call. In deze beschrijving moet het volgende staan:
  • De connectie van het kunstwerk met het onderwerp;
  • Medium- en materiaalkeuze; 
  • Visuele beschrijving van het werk dat je wilt maken (formaat, etc.).
• Je kunstenaars-cv (in PDF-formaat);
• Als je wilt deelnemen met bestaand werk, ontvangen we graag een volledige beschrijving en visuele weergave van het werk (in JPG/JPEG-formaat met maximaal drie foto’s);
• Als je wilt deelnemen met een adaptatie van bestaand werk of een nieuw werk, hebben we een ruwe schatting van de materiaalkosten nodig (max. €500);
• Als je wilt deelnemen met audiovisueel werk, willen we graag een Youtube- of Vimeo-link ontvangen (inclusief wachtwoord).

Fysieke kunstwerken moeten zich binnen Nederland bevinden in verband met transport.
Studenten worden aangemoedigd om deel te nemen, maar moeten zich ervan bewust zijn dat de meerderheid (>75%) van de geselecteerde kunstenaars werkende kunstenaars zullen zijn.

Deadline voor inzendingen: 3 oktober 2024
Geselecteerde kunstenaars horen vóór 15 oktober 2024 van ons.

Geselecteerde kunstenaars worden gecompenseerd volgens de richtlijnen van https://www.kunstenaarshonorarium.bknl.nl/.

De tentoonstelling in Kunstlinie opent in februari 2025, dus het is belangrijk dat je werk halverwege januari klaar is om tentoongesteld te worden.

At the moment of writing we are entangled in a constellation of crises; war, climate, globalization, hypercapitalism, human-right crises etc. Some crises are currently more apparent than others, but all are equally relevant due to their interconnectedness with us and the systems of power that thrive on these crises. In the face of these afflictions, some people are burying their heads in the sand, others resign themselves to nihilism and/or misanthropy, some are actively fighting for change, and some are questioning that fight to maintain their stake in the status quo. For us to collectively tackle those and to be able to move into a sustainable future we need to be able to visualize the unknown and take action. 

Seeds for the future

With the upcoming exhibition RE:FWD: (formerly No Time To Despair) we, co-curators Caithlin Courtney Chong, Thierno Deme and Mees Elias van Zanten, will attempt to plant seeds for a hopeful future. Having this goal in mind, we would like artists to actively invite the audience to grieve their pasts, adapt their present and envision possible futures. 

This exhibition is focused on artists under 35, not as a category of just “emerging” or “underrepresented” artists, but because of the distinct ways younger generations have been impacted by a constellation of crises. The weight of these realities shapes their present and their future in profound ways, which is why we, as curators of the same generation, want to engage in a dialogue with fellow young artists who are navigating the same struggles and hopes. We believe that this is a crucial moment to understand how young people envision hope and transformation.

Participate!

All artists who are currently under 35, residing in the Netherlands and whose practice aligns with topics such as collectivism, interconnectedness, societal change, (redefinition of) hope, the imagination of otherwise realities/possible futures (e.g. ´Egalitarian Utopias´) and grief, are highly encouraged to take part in our open call with either existing, adapted or new work.

The exhibition RE:FWD: will take place at two different venues: 

• Kunstlinie (Almere) for approx. six months;
• NDSM FUSE (Amsterdam) for approx. six weeks. 

Interested?

What we need from you: 

• A brief description (max. 250 words) of the work you want to create for/participate with in the open call. In this description there should be: 
  • Connection between your work and the theme of the exhibition;
  • Medium of choice and materials you want to work with; 
  • Visual description of the work you want to make (size, etc.).

• Your artist resume (in PDF-format);
• If you want to participate with existing work, we would like to receive a full description and visual representation of the work (in JPG/JPEG-format with a maximum of three pictures);
• If you want to participate with an adaptation of existing work or a new work, we will need a rough estimation of the material costs (max. €500);
• If you want to participate with audiovisual work we would like you to provide us with a Youtube- or Vimeo-link (including the password).
  

*Artists can participate with a maximum of three works;

*Physical artworks should be located within the Netherlands due to transportation; 

*Students are encouraged to take part, but should be aware that the majority (at least 75%) of the picked artists will be working artists.

Picked artists will hear back from us by October 15th 2024.

Picked artists will be compensated according to the guidelines of https://www.kunstenaarshonorarium.bknl.nl/

How to participate

The exhibition in Kunstlinie will open in February 2025, so it’s important that your work is ready for display by mid-January.
